Rod Brind’Amour grabbed the Stanley Cup, tossed it in the air, caught it and hoisted it over his head. Twenty years ago he did that as captain of the Hurricanes. On Sunday he did it as their head coach.

Carolina beat Vegas 3-0 in Game 6 for the franchise’s second title, and Brind’Amour became the fourth man to captain and coach the same NHL team to championships. He joins Toe Blake of Montreal, Hap Day of Toronto and Cooney Weiland of Boston.

Brind’Amour was still on the ice when he tried to put the feeling into words.

“You don’t even know what you’re thinking at that point. It’s more seeing all the players look at you and how happy they are for me. Like, it’s the other way around. I was wanting this for them, and they felt it.”

Seth Jarvis got a kick out of how his coach handled the trophy.

“I thought he was going to spike it. I thought he was going to throw it on the ground. But it was incredible.”

Brind’Amour has spent 26 years in Carolina, 10 as a player and the past eight as coach. The team missed the playoffs nine straight seasons before he took over the bench and has made it every year since. The full story of the night is in our Game 6 recap.

Rod the Bod lifted the Cup in 2006 and again in 2026. No coach in Raleigh will ever mean more to this franchise.
