The Rangers walked into the draft chasing a center and walked out with a sniper.
New York acquired Pavel Dorofeyev from the Vegas Golden Knights on Friday, then signed him to a seven-year, $77 million extension before he could reach restricted free agency. The deal carries an $11 million cap hit.
Vegas got the No. 26 pick and a third-round pick in this year’s draft, plus a top-10 protected first-rounder in 2028. Here is the team confirming the move:
Dorofeyev was the pivot. New York spent the week linked to Mason McTavish, who ended up in St. Louis instead. The Blueshirts turned around and grabbed a goal scorer who might fit their roster even better.
He scored 37 goals last season, his second straight year over 30. His 20 power-play goals ranked second in the entire league, and he added 16 points in 22 games during Vegas’s run to the Stanley Cup Final.
Take a look at what the Rangers are getting:
Now 25, Dorofeyev led Vegas in goals each of the last two seasons. He carried a $1.835 million cap hit last year, so the new contract is a massive raise for a player Vegas drafted in the third round back in 2019.
Pierre LeBrun of TSN first reported the extension terms.
Goal scorers like this rarely hit the open market, and the Rangers paid in picks and dollars to make sure this one never did.
