The Mason McTavish trade talk just shifted into a higher gear.

Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff reported Thursday that the Ducks and Rangers have entered advanced discussions on a deal for the 23-year-old center. He was careful to add that nothing is finished yet.

Here’s what Seravalli posted:

New York isn’t the only team with an offer on the table. ESPN’s Emily Kaplan reported that Anaheim is weighing two offers right now, and the St. Louis Blues are believed to be the other suitor.

This has been building for a couple weeks. We covered Darren Dreger saying McTavish was “going to be traded” earlier this month, and the market has only gotten louder since.

McTavish went third overall in 2021 and was supposed to be Anaheim’s franchise center. He’s signed through 2030-31 at a $7 million cap hit, so whoever lands him is taking on real term, not a rental.

His value did take a hit this past season. McTavish put up 17 goals and 41 points in 75 games, watched his ice time drop, and got healthy-scratched a few times along the way. That dip might be the reason Anaheim is finally open to moving him.

The Rangers reportedly want to pull this off without touching Vincent Trocheck. Detroit and Toronto have also been floated as teams that could place a call.

Now Anaheim has to decide which package it likes better, and with the draft right around the corner, that call could come fast.
