- Panthers acquire Jacob Markstrom and Angus Crookshank from the Devils
- New Jersey gets Evan Rodrigues, Jesper Boqvist and Ben Steeves, no salary retained
- Read below for what the trade means for Sergei Bobrovsky
The Florida Panthers found their new starting goalie.
Florida acquired Jacob Markstrom from the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday, per Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic. The Panthers also land forward Angus Crookshank. New Jersey gets back forwards Evan Rodrigues, Jesper Boqvist and Ben Steeves.
Here’s the full breakdown from LeBrun:
New Jersey did not retain any salary in the deal. Markstrom’s two-year extension at a $6 million cap hit starts next season.
Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet had the deal coming earlier in the day, reporting the teams were working on something built around Markstrom and Rodrigues:
The bigger story might be who this pushes out. Sergei Bobrovsky won two Stanley Cups in Florida and a Vezina before that, but he’s a pending unrestricted free agent. The crease belongs to someone else now.
This is the second goalie the Panthers have added in two days. They grabbed Akira Schmid from Vegas on Monday.
Markstrom is 36 and coming off a tough season. He put up an .883 save percentage in 44 games for the Devils last year. His career line reads a lot better, a .907 mark across 578 NHL games.
Rodrigues, Boqvist and Crookshank all have one year left on their contracts. Steeves is a restricted free agent.
Florida is betting a former Vezina finalist bounces back behind one of the deepest defenses in the league.
