Alex Ovechkin already knows how he wants his career to end. So does his mom.

Tatyana Ovechkina was asked by RIA Novosti where she would like to see her son play once he is done in the NHL, and she did not hedge much.

“It’s up to him. I’d like to see him in a Dynamo jersey, but that’s a matter of time. He’ll make his own decision.”

She is not a neutral party here. Ovechkina won two Olympic basketball golds with the Soviet Union and now runs Dynamo’s women’s basketball club as its president.

Her son has been landing on the same answer for years. He said in July that his last game in hockey will come in a Dynamo sweater, an idea he first floated back in 2020.

The roots go back to childhood. Ovechkin joined Dynamo’s school at 10 and made his senior debut on Nov. 14, 2001, at the age of 16.

He piled up 69 points in 152 games over four seasons with the club and won a Russian Superleague title in 2005 before leaving for Washington, which had taken him first overall in 2004.

Ovechkin came back during the 2012-13 lockout and put up 40 points in 31 games. Dynamo captured the Gagarin Cup that spring after he had already rejoined the Capitals, and he was credited as part of that championship group.

Take a look at his first KHL hat trick with Dynamo:

None of it is happening soon. Ovechkin re-signed with the Capitals in July on a one-year extension carrying a $4.25 million average annual value, which lines him up for a 22nd NHL season. He turns 41 next month.

Ovechkina was asked about that contract a couple of days earlier, and she made a point of saying the whole family worked through it together.

“Of course, I’m glad that Sasha signed a new contract with Washington. He will play another season at the highest level. I’m glad he made this decision together with his family.”

“He did the right thing by consulting with his family. Sasha has a wonderful wife and wonderful children. They all supported Sasha, and he decided to spend another season in the NHL.”

The greatest goal scorer in hockey history is not done yet:

Ovechkin still serves as an advisor to Dynamo and shows up at club events most summers. The jersey his mother wants to see can wait until Washington is finished with him.
