Alex Ovechkin already knows how his career ends.
He just doesn’t know when. Speaking on FONBET’s “FONtour 2026 World Cup” show this weekend, the Capitals captain laid out the one part of his future he’s sure about.
“My last game in hockey will be for Dynamo Moscow,” Ovechkin said, per RMNB.

The quote landed just over two weeks after Ovechkin signed a one-year extension to stay in Washington. He flew to the New York area this weekend for Fanatics Fest and the World Cup final, then dropped the Dynamo line during the taping.
This is not a new idea for him. Ovechkin came up through Dynamo’s academy and played four seasons there before the Capitals took him first overall in 2004. He brought the Stanley Cup to the Moscow complex in 2018 and skated for the club during the 2012-13 lockout.

Ovechkin first floated the idea back in 2020, telling Russian television he wanted to “finish on a high note” with Dynamo once his NHL days wrapped up. His reasoning then was simple. He has only ever played for two clubs, and he wants the last shift to come where the first one did.
That last shift is still a way off. Ovechkin is signed through 2026-27, and the 40-year-old has said he wants to chase 1,000 career goals before he calls it. The Dynamo sendoff is a someday thing, and he’s in no hurry to book the date.
