Four years ago today, the Flames shipped Matthew Tkachuk to Florida. It has not gotten any easier for Calgary to watch.
Since the July 22, 2022 blockbuster, Tkachuk has won two Stanley Cups with the Panthers. Calgary got Jonathan Huberdeau, MacKenzie Weegar, Cole Schwindt and a first-round pick back, and none of it has come close to matching what Florida landed.

Tkachuk has the hardware. Huberdeau has averaged 0.67 points per game on his $10.5 million cap hit in Calgary, a steep drop from the point-per-game scorer he was in Florida. Weegar has since moved on and now plays in Utah.
The deal was a sign-and-trade, the first the NHL ever processed. Tkachuk agreed to an eight-year extension worth $76 million as a condition, then went to work. He scored the Cup-clinching goal in Game 6 of the 2025 Final against Edmonton, capping back-to-back titles.

Huberdeau signed his own eight-year, $84 million extension in Calgary weeks after the trade. The production never followed him north.
The Flames are deep into a rebuild, and the biggest trade in recent franchise memory has yet to deliver a real payoff. Florida opens next season on the road in Carolina. Four years in, the Tkachuk deal looks like one of the most lopsided trades of the cap era.
