The Oilers and Matt Savoie have not had a single conversation about his next contract.
Savoie’s agent, Gerry Johannson, joined Oilers Now with Bob Stauffer on Tuesday and got asked whether extension talks had started in Edmonton. He didn’t dance around it.
“We haven’t, only because I think Edmonton’s in a unique position where they’re in a win-now mode. Matt really likes it here, and we’d love him to stay here. I know he would. I think in talking to Stan that will come. But as we know, Edmonton is pretty focused on this year.”

One year remains on Savoie’s entry-level contract, which carries an $886,666 cap hit. He becomes a restricted free agent next summer.
Colton Dach is another Johannson client in Edmonton, and he signed a two-year deal with the Oilers earlier this month.
Production isn’t the question. Savoie played all 82 games in his first full NHL season and finished with 18 goals, 37 points and a plus-6 rating.
Nineteen of those points came in his last 24 games, after he managed 18 through the first 58.

Six playoff games brought one assist, so the spring was quieter.
Edmonton leaned on the 22-year-old shorthanded, too. Savoie logged more than 132 penalty-kill minutes in 2025-26, the most of any Oilers forward.
Waiting carries a risk. St. Louis pried Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway out of Edmonton with offer sheets two summers ago, and a 25-goal season would push Savoie’s next number far past what he earns today.
Stan Bowman has spent this offseason building around the group he has, trading Darnell Nurse and handing the bench to Mike Babcock.
Johannson expects the sides to get to it sooner than later. Edmonton just isn’t in a hurry, and Savoie’s price climbs with every step he takes.
