Logan Cooley saved the Utah Mammoth in his hometown with one second left on the clock.

The Pittsburgh native batted a puck out of the air with his backhand to complete a hat trick and tie it 3-3, and Utah went on to beat the Penguins 4-3 in overtime at PPG Paints Arena on Thursday night.

Watch the buzzer-beater that completed the Cooley hat trick:

The tying goal came 24 seconds after Ben Kindel had given Pittsburgh a 3-2 lead, scoring on a loose puck just outside the crease. Cooley’s equalizer wiped that lead out before the Penguins could enjoy it.

Cooley scored all three of Utah’s regulation goals. He opened the scoring at 4:40 of the first period, intercepting a pass from Erik Karlsson and snapping a wrist shot from the left circle.

He made it 2-0 at 14:11 by splitting Karlsson and Spencer Stastney, then racing to the net for a blocker-side shot. Check out the second goal:

Karlsson got one back at 8:38 of the second period, and Rickard Rakell tied it 2-2 with a short-handed goal at 10:59 of the third. That set up Kindel’s go-ahead goal and Cooley’s last-second answer.

In overtime, Mikhail Sergachev finished it with a wrist shot from the slot off the rebound of a Barrett Hayton shot at 3:27. Here’s the winner:

Sebastian Cossa made 31 saves for the Mammoth, who improved to 9-5-0. Arturs Silovs stopped 30 for the Penguins (5-6-2), and Evgeni Malkin had two assists.

Kindel was back in the lineup after the scare on the team plane earlier this month. He had a goal and an assist in his return, and we covered his return to practice earlier this week after Penguins GM Kyle Dubas explained what happened on the plane.

Cooley now heads home with a hat trick he’ll be hearing about in Pittsburgh for a while.
