The Jets got the win Wednesday night. They might have lost their best defenseman in the process.

Josh Morrissey left Winnipeg’s 3-2 win over the Colorado Avalanche with an upper-body injury, and the team didn’t have an update on him after the game. The Jets announced during the second period that he wouldn’t be coming back:

It happened late in the first period. Morrissey lined up Avalanche forward T.J. Hughes along the boards, but Hughes slipped out of the way and Morrissey went straight into the boards instead.

He looked to jam his right hand or wrist on the play and was favoring that arm as he skated off.

Watch the missed hit that sent Morrissey to the room:

Morrissey did come back out to start the second. He lasted one shift before heading down the tunnel for good.

Head coach Scott Arniel was asked about his top defenseman after the game and kept it short, per Mike McIntyre of the Winnipeg Free Press:

“Just an upper body. We’ll check on it tomorrow and see how it is,” Arniel said.

His night ended after 9:32 of ice time, with one shot and one blocked shot. He has three assists in four games this season, two of them on the power play.

Dylan Samberg picked up a big chunk of the slack, logging 25:25 with two assists and five hits. Mario Ferraro played 23:36.

Kyle Connor ended up stealing the headlines with the game-winner with one minute left in regulation, his fifth goal in four games.

Haydn Fleury is Winnipeg’s extra defenseman if Morrissey has to sit, and he played 38 games for the Jets last season.

Any extended absence would sting. The 31-year-old has put up 55 or more points in each of the last four seasons, including a career-best 76 in 2022-23, and he averaged 24:43 a night last year.

Winnipeg hosts the Ducks on Friday, and Morrissey’s status for that game is still up in the air.
