  • Jaccob Slavin became just the second American to win the Stanley Cup and Olympic gold in the same season
  • The only other to do it was Ken Morrow, who pulled it off in 1980 with the Miracle on Ice and the Islanders
  • Read below for the full list of players who have managed the double and how Slavin got there

Jaccob Slavin is in a club of two.

The Hurricanes defenseman lifted the Stanley Cup on Sunday night after Carolina shut out the Vegas Golden Knights 3-0 in Game 6, closing out the Final in six. With the win, Slavin became just the second American-born player to take an Olympic gold medal and a Stanley Cup in the same season.

Ken Morrow is the only other man on that list. He won gold with the 1980 Miracle on Ice team in Lake Placid, then raised the Cup with the New York Islanders a few months later. Morrow turned that spring into a dynasty, winning four straight titles on Long Island.

Rob Taub laid out the short list:

Slavin earned his gold back in February, when Team USA upset Canada for the title at the Milan Olympics. Four months later he is a Stanley Cup champion, the first the franchise has produced since it won it all in 2006.

A handful of Canadians have managed the gold-and-Cup double. Steve Yzerman and Brendan Shanahan did it in 2002. Jonathan Toews, Duncan Keith and Brent Seabrook followed in 2010. Drew Doughty and Jeff Carter got there in 2014. Slavin is the first American to join the group since Morrow, and only the second ever.

Carolina wasted no time celebrating its first title in 20 years:

Now 32, the blue-liner has spent all 11 of his NHL seasons in Carolina. He put up four assists this postseason while logging around 23 minutes a night, the kind of quiet, heavy-minutes work that rarely lands on a highlight reel.

Forty-six years separated Morrow and Slavin. The list of Americans to win gold and a Cup in one season now runs exactly two names deep.
