Pyotr Kochetkov isn’t going anywhere.
The Hurricanes signed their goaltender to a two-year, $7.9 million contract extension on Friday. It carries a $3.95 million cap hit and runs through the 2028-29 season.
Carolina made it official on X:
That deal breaks down to a $2.4 million salary and $1.5 million signing bonus in 2027-28, then a $3 million salary and $1 million bonus in 2028-29, according to the team.
Hurricanes GM Eric Tulsky explained why Carolina is banking on Kochetkov for the long haul.
“Pyotr is an incredibly talented goalie whose aggressive style fits our team very well,” Tulsky said. “We believe in his ability to win games for this organization and are thrilled he wants to continue helping us pursue championships in Carolina.”
Kochetkov was limited to nine games last season before hip surgery ended his year in December. He went 6-2-0 with a 2.33 goals-against average, a .899 save percentage and one shutout before the injury.
He was healthy enough to back up Brandon Bussi during the Stanley Cup Final after Frederik Andersen got hurt, but he never got into a game.
Bussi signed his own three-year deal last year, carrying a $1.9 million cap hit through 2028-29. Add it up and Carolina has two capable goalies under contract for the next three seasons at a combined price under $6 million.
Selected in the second round (No. 36) of the 2019 draft, Kochetkov is 71-38-12 with a 2.46 goals-against average and a .905 save percentage in 125 career games, with 11 shutouts to his name.
