Flyers fans are not letting this one go.
Less than a day after Sidney Crosby got tagged with an embellishment penalty in Game 3, the Phans of Philly crew went out and bought billboard space along I-95 just to remind the Penguins captain where he stands in this city. The group, which runs road-game tailgates and travel packages for Flyers supporters, teamed with Keystone Outdoor to get the sign up Thursday morning.
The billboard reads like a love letter with brass knuckles. Philly has been waiting 20-plus years to stick it to Crosby, and a 3-0 series lead finally gave them the opening.
Pittsburgh came into the series as the favorite, then dropped three in a row to their cross-state rival. Wednesday’s 5-2 loss at Xfinity Mobile Arena put them on the brink, and Crosby’s dive call on a Garnet Hathaway high stick gave the locals the headline they needed.
Trevor Zegras and Noah Cates each put up a goal and an assist, and 19-year-old rookie Porter Martone picked up another point to keep his rookie scoring streak alive. The Flyers outshot, outhit and generally outworked the Pens from the opening puck.
Only four teams in NHL history have come back from 3-0 down in a series. Crosby knows the number. He’d probably rather not see it framed on a billboard on his way into town.
Philly hosts Game 4 on Friday night with a chance to finish the sweep. If the Flyers close it out, this billboard becomes a keepsake. If Pittsburgh somehow claws back, the Phans of Philly are going to hear about it from every Penguins fan with a functioning WiFi signal.
Either way, they got their shot in. And in a rivalry that has produced two decades of bad blood, petty wins like this one tend to stick around.
