Nikolaj Ehlers gave the Stanley Cup a ride it won’t forget.
The Carolina Hurricanes forward buckled Lord Stanley into the passenger seat of a yellow Lamborghini on Thursday and cruised through Aalborg, his hometown in Denmark, on his day with the Cup. The trophy rode shotgun the whole way to Sparekassen Danmark Arena.

Around 4,000 people showed up at the arena to see the champion and the trophy. Ehlers and the Cup walked a red carpet as the crowd cheered, and during the autograph session he signed a teenage fan’s forehead before posing for a picture with the Cup.

Earlier in the day, Ehlers stopped by Aalborg Town Hall, where he picked up gifts and met with mayor Lasse Frimand Jensen.
Ehlers talked about what the whole day meant to him in a video from NHL Europe. “It’s been fantastic to be able to take the trophy home to Aalborg and Denmark,” Ehlers said. “There are a lot of people who have come from all over Denmark, so that means a lot. It’s been a solid day and right now that gives me a little closure to the wildest month I’ve had. It’s been fantastic and I’m super happy.”

The wild month adds up. Ehlers won his first Stanley Cup in his first season with Carolina, capping a decade of chasing one in Winnipeg. He landed in Raleigh last summer and walked away a champion.
He had Danish company, too. Goalie Frederik Andersen won the Cup with the same team, making the two of them the first pair of Danish players to lift it in the same season. Andersen took his own Danish Cup day to Legoland just a day earlier.
