Colin White just had the best season of his pro career, and it bought him another NHL contract.
New Jersey announced Thursday that it signed the 29-year-old forward to a one-year, two-way deal for 2026-27 worth $900,000 at the NHL level and $400,000 in the AHL. General manager Sunny Mehta and Utica Comets GM Braden Birch confirmed the move.
White racked up 48 points (21 goals, 27 assists) in 46 games with the San Jose Barracuda last season. That ranked second on the team, and his goal, assist and point totals were all career highs at the AHL level.
That production is a long way from where his NHL track record left off. He has played three games at the top level across the past two seasons, all with San Jose in 2024-25.
Ottawa took him 21st overall in 2015, and he looked like a keeper early on. He hung 41 points (14 goals, 27 assists) on the league in 2018-19, his first full NHL season, and the Senators handed him a six-year, $28.5 million extension that summer.
Injuries and a sharp scoring drop turned that contract into one of the ugliest in franchise history. Ottawa bought out the final three years after 2021-22.
Since then he has bounced through Florida, Pittsburgh, Montreal and San Jose, mostly on the minor league side. He did dress for 21 playoff games during the Panthers’ run to the 2023 Stanley Cup Final.
His career NHL ledger sits at 113 points (44 goals, 69 assists) in 323 games.
Utica is the likely landing spot to open the year. New Jersey has burned through call-ups the past few seasons, though, and a right-shot center who just finished second on an AHL club in scoring is the type of name that gets a phone call in November.
The signing comes a day after the Devils closed out their restricted free agent business by re-signing Topias Vilen to his own one-year, two-way deal.
