The Edmonton Oilers were once again on the brink of losing in regulation in Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Finals against the Florida Panthers, but Corey Perry saved the day to force overtime.
The veteran put away a loose puck with just 17.8 seconds left, beating Sergei Bobrovsky blocker side. That was the latest game-tying goal in Stanley Cup Finals history since 1951 when Tod Sloan scored at 19:28 of the third period. The record held for 74 years:
A very clutch moment from Perry, who is still producing the goods at 40 years old. He’s been solid for the Oilers in the playoffs, scoring eight goals and tallying four assists in 18 postseason contests. Perry also tallied a helper in Game 1.
Perry has been a great signing for Edmonton since joining in January of last year, giving them production and leadership in the locker room. He put up 30 points in the regular season as well.
Friday’s matchup was another thriller at Rogers Place. One overtime period wasn’t enough, with the Oilers and Panthers heading into 2OT. But, it didn’t last long, with Brad Marchand scoring a shorthanded goal at 8:04. Marchand scored twice in Game 2.
Both squads fought hard, and the Oilers certainly had their chances. Connor McDavid was brilliant once again, supplying three helpers. McDavid also made NHL history.
This series is going to be an absolute battle, as we’ve seen through the first two games. The Cats needed to grab a victory on the road before heading home for Games 3 and 4. The Oilers are a resilient group, though, and you can expect them to respond on Monday.
