Brett Berard has a new deal in Montreal.
General manager Kent Hughes signed the 23-year-old forward to a one-year, two-way contract on Thursday. The deal carries an $850,000 cap hit at the NHL level.
The signing ties off a move that started two weeks ago. Montreal acquired Berard’s rights from the Rangers on June 26 in exchange for defenseman William Trudeau, who signed his own one-year deal in New York after the swap.
Here’s the Canadiens confirming the trade that brought him in:
Berard played 13 games with the Rangers last season and didn’t pick up a point. Most of his year came in the AHL, where he put up six goals and 16 assists over 41 games with the Hartford Wolf Pack.
The Providence native has 10 points in 48 career NHL games since debuting in 2024-25. He’s been a reliable producer in Hartford, racking up 40 goals and 53 assists across 145 games there over four seasons.
At 5-foot-9 and 175 pounds, Berard leans on speed and skill down the lineup. Montreal has been busy adding cheap depth all summer, and he gives them another young forward to push for a bottom-six spot in training camp.
