Boston isn’t waiting around to find out what Fraser Minten turns into.
The Bruins signed the 22-year-old center to a seven-year extension on Tuesday, a $50.4 million commitment that carries a $7.2 million cap hit and runs through the 2033-34 season. Boston is betting big on a player with exactly one full NHL year behind him.
Nothing changes on Boston’s cap sheet right away. Minten still has to play out the final year of his entry-level deal at $879,166, and the new contract starts in 2027-28. He would have been a restricted free agent next July.
General manager Don Sweeney laid out the reasoning in the team’s announcement:
“Since joining our organization, Fraser has continued to grow and earn the accelerated trust of his teammates and coaching staff. His hockey sense, competitiveness, responsible two-way game, and offensive growth make him a valuable player for our group.”
Minten played all 82 games last season and finished with 17 goals and 35 points, the most by a Bruins rookie since 2017-18. His plus-21 rating led every first-year player in the league, and he threw 142 hits along the way.
January was his month. Minten led all NHL rookies in scoring with eight goals and 14 points and walked away with Rookie of the Month honors. He spent chunks of the year riding shotgun with David Pastrnak, too, which is not where a third-line projection usually ends up.
His new cap hit slots in fourth on the roster. Only Pastrnak ($11.25 million), Elias Lindholm ($7.75 million) and JJ Peterka ($7.7 million) will cost Boston more.
Remember how he got here. Minten came over from Toronto in March 2025 as the centerpiece of the Brandon Carlo trade, a package that also brought Boston a 2026 first-round pick and a 2025 fourth-rounder. The Maple Leafs had taken him 38th overall in 2022.
None of this came out of nowhere. Minten told Jim McBride of the Boston Globe late last month that a long-term deal was on his mind and that getting one done in Boston would be “super appealing”. Ten days later, he had it.
