In what appeared to be a set play executed to perfection, Chandler Stephenson won the draw, immediately playing it forward to Brandon Montour, who was practically off to the races before the puck even hit the ice. He charged after the puck, gathered it over the blue line, and fired off a wicked wrister top shelf, beating Habs rookie goaltender Jakub Dobes.
Montour’s record-breaking goal matches the all-time NHL record for fastest goal to start any period, with the last occasion coming in the 2013-14 season when James van Riemsdyk lit the lamp 4 seconds after the start of the 2nd period for the Toronto Maple Leafs.
The goal caps off a comeback win that saw the Kraken overcome a late 2-goal deficit in the 3rd period, including a tying goal from Matty Beniers with 2:12 left in regulation to tie the game at 4 apiece.
Montour finished the night with a monstrous 4-point performance (2 G, 2 A). Including assists on the third and fourth Kraken goals to force overtime in the first place.
With the heartbreaking loss, the Canadiens leave a valuable point on the table in the midst of a playoff race that’s quickly heating up. A win last night would have gotten the Habs into possession of the highly contested final wild-card spot, leapfrogging the Columbus Blue Jackets.
