The Blues won’t need an arbitrator after all.

St. Louis locked up Connor McMichael on Thursday, signing the restricted free agent to a six-year contract worth $40.5 million. That works out to a $6.75 million cap hit through the 2031-32 season.

McMichael was scheduled for an arbitration hearing on July 25. Now he skips it. He and the Blues got a long-term deal done first, which is what both sides wanted from the start.

Here’s the announcement from the Blues:

McMichael only just arrived in St. Louis. The Blues sent Jordan Kyrou to Washington on June 23 and brought back McMichael as the headline piece of that trade.

He put up 14 goals and 46 points in 78 games for the Capitals last season. The year before was his best in the league, a 26-goal, 57-point run in 2024-25.

Committing six years to a player coming off a quieter year is a bet on that 2024-25 version turning up in St. Louis. If it does, $6.75 million is a fine price for a middle-six scorer heading into his prime.

The 25-year-old filed for arbitration earlier this month, so this deal closes the book on that process before it ever reached a hearing.

St. Louis made it official soon after:

McMichael has yet to play a game for the Blues. He’s now under contract through his age-31 season before he even takes a shift in St. Louis.
