- Utah sends defenseman Maksymilian Szuber to Montreal in the swap
- Mammoth quickly sign Roy to a one-year, two-way deal worth $850K

The Utah Mammoth went out and grabbed a former World Juniors star on Monday.
Utah acquired forward Joshua Roy from the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for defenseman Maksymilian Szuber, the team announced. Both players were headed for restricted free agency on July 1.
Here’s the move from the Mammoth:
The Mammoth didn’t wait long to lock him up. A few hours after the trade, Utah signed Roy to a one-year, two-way contract worth $850,000 for the 2026-27 season.
Utah made the contract official a little later:
Roy is no stranger to the spotlight. The 22-year-old from Saint-Georges-de-Beauce, Quebec, won back-to-back gold medals with Canada at the World Juniors, and his 2023 run was the loud one. He finished second in team scoring behind Connor Bedard and set up Dylan Guenther for the golden goal in overtime against Czechia.
Montreal drafted him 150th overall in 2021, and he lit up the QMJHL before turning pro. The scoring carried over to the minors. Roy put up 23 goals and 45 points in 57 games for the AHL’s Laval Rocket last season.
The NHL has been a tougher climb. Roy managed just 38 games with the Canadiens across three years, scoring six goals and 11 points while averaging a shade under 12 minutes a night.
Expect Utah to start him with the AHL’s Tucson Roadrunners. If he keeps filling the net at that level, a call-up won’t be far behind.
Szuber heads the other way after three seasons in Tucson. The 6-foot-3 defenseman racked up 11 goals and 27 points in 65 games for the Roadrunners last year, but a crowded Utah blue line left him without a clear path to NHL minutes.
This is a low-risk swap of restricted free agents for both teams. Utah keeps stacking depth this offseason after re-signing Kailer Yamamoto earlier in the day.
