HIGHLIGHTS

  • Seguin tears ACL in first period vs Rangers, likely done for season
  • 33-year-old had 17 points in 27 games before injury
  • Nathan Bastian replaces Seguin in Stars lineup

The Stars got the worst possible news on Tyler Seguin.

Dallas head coach Glen Gulutzan confirmed Wednesday that Seguin tore his ACL during Tuesday’s 3-2 overtime loss to the Rangers and will miss the rest of the season.

“We didn’t get great news today,” Gulutzan said. “Haven’t spoken to Tyler yet, but probably just letting everybody know that he’s going to be out for a significant amount of time — probably the rest of the season.”

The injury happened early. Seguin got tangled up with Rangers defenseman Vladislav Gavrikov along the boards and needed help getting off the ice at 1:44 of the first period.

An ACL tear means 6-9 months of recovery, which could push Seguin’s return into the 2025-26 season. That’s a brutal blow for a Stars team sitting second in the Central Division at 17-5-5.

Seguin had been playing every game this season after missing most of last year with hip surgery. The 33-year-old forward had 17 points (seven goals, 10 assists) in 27 games and celebrated his 1,000th NHL game back in October.

Insider Frank Seravalli reports the Stars will receive $3.82 million in cap relief
with Seguin on LTIR. However, they can use Seguin’s full $9.85M cap hit if it’s
confirmed the injury is season-ending.

Nathan Bastian draws into the lineup as Seguin’s replacement. The Stars visit New Jersey on Wednesday, and Gulutzan isn’t making excuses.

“It’s a tough day for us today with the news, but other guys now have to step in and play,” he said. “The rest of the league is in the same boat. There’s lots of injuries piling up, and lots of games, so we just got to keep moving forward.”

Seguin, the No. 2 pick in 2010, won the Cup with Boston in 2011 and has 826 points in 1,016 career games. This isn’t his first battle with injuries, but an ACL tear at 33 is rough timing.

The Stars are also still waiting on Matt Duchene, who’s missed 24 of 25 games with an upper-body injury. Gulutzan said Duchene’s return is “day to day” but won’t play Wednesday.

Dallas will need guys to step up if they want to hold their spot in the playoff race.
