Trevor Zegras gets penalty for stealing Joel Kirvanta's stick

Trevor Zegras thought he was slick.

Zegras provided one of the funniest moments of the 2022-23 NHL season on Wednesday night. The Anaheim Ducks were hosting the Dallas Stars at Honda Center. The Ducks won the game 2-0.

During the second period, Zegras received a penalty for “illegal equipment.” The way in which he got the penalty is something you don’t see every day.

Zegras checked Dallas forward Joel Kirvanta in the offensive zone and broke his stick on Kirvanta’s back. After losing his own stick, Zegras hilariously stole Kirvanta’s stick and tried to pretend it was his own.

Unfortunately for Zegras, the ref saw right through his antics. As Zegras pleaded with his hands in the air pretending to be clueless, the ref pointed at the stick and showed him Kirvanta’s name on it.

Check out this funny sequence below:

The best part might be Kirvanta pleading to the ref like a little brother complaining to his mom about his older brother. “Mom! Trevor stole my stick!”

Zegras explained what happened in his post-game interview.

“My stick broke, I pinned him against the glass and I was like you know what I’m just going to steal his stick”, Zegras said.

Zegras admitted to reporters he thought he could get away with it.

“I didn’t think anybody would notice,” Zegras said. “I tried to claim that I found it on the ice which nobody was buying.”

Zegras stealing Kirvanta’s stick brings back memories of another funny incident in Anaheim. During a game in 2010, Ducks’ forward Bobby Ryan lost his stick in the offensive zone. Ryan picked up the stick of opposing forward Mikko Koivu and actually scored a goal with it.

Zegras following in Bobby Ryan’s footsteps is proof he was born to be an Anaheim Duck. You also can’t forget longtime Duck Corey Perry was known for his trolling, including stealing sticks from the opposition.

Zegras did pick up an assist in the game, and the Ducks got the victory, so his teammates were likely laughing about the whole thing post game.

As the saying goes…if you’re not cheating, you’re not trying.
