Nick Suzuki didn’t sugarcoat it.

The Canadiens captain walked to the podium after Saturday’s 8-3 Game 6 loss to the Sabres and called the collapse exactly what it was.

Suzuki was asked about Montreal blowing a 3-1 lead and surrendering seven straight goals at the Bell Centre.

“It’s probably the worst game we’ve played. We’re only going up. I think it’s going to be important for guys to look themselves in the mirror and say we’ve got an opportunity to win one game and move on to the third round. We’d take that any time throughout the season.”

The night opened in stunning fashion. Buffalo captain Rasmus Dahlin beat Jakub Dobes 32 seconds in, and the Sabres looked ready to roll.

Then Montreal punched back. Arber Xhekaj, Ivan Demidov on the power play, and Jake Evans short-handed scored on three of Montreal’s first three shots. Sabres head coach Lindy Ruff yanked Alex Lyon after one save on four shots.

Take a look at how the wild opening played out:

Buffalo didn’t blink. Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen entered cold and stopped all 17 shots he faced. The Sabres reeled off seven unanswered goals and finished 4-for-6 on the power play. Montreal went 1-for-3.

Game 6 was supposed to be the closeout for a Habs side that grabbed a 3-2 series lead with a 6-3 win in Game 5. Instead, Bell Centre watched Montreal absorb its worst beating of the spring.
