The San Jose Sharks made the biggest splash of their offseason on the opening day of free agency.

San Jose signed free-agent forward Mason Marchment to a five-year contract worth $6.75 million per season, according to TSN’s Pierre LeBrun. The 31-year-old winger hands a young Sharks group a proven scorer up front.

There’s some history in this one. Marchment’s late father, Bryan, spent six seasons in San Jose and suited up for 334 games with the Sharks. Now his son pulls on the same sweater.

Marchment split last season between Seattle and Columbus, racking up 19 goals and 26 assists. The Blue Jackets gave up second- and fourth-round picks to pry him from the Kraken at the deadline.

His best hockey came in Dallas. Marchment posted 22 goals, 31 assists and a plus-22 rating in 2023-24, the kind of season the Sharks are betting he can find again.

Take a look at all 22 of those goals:

He isn’t the only new face in San Jose. The Sharks also signed defenseman Jacob Trouba to a four-year deal at $8.25 million a year, adding another veteran to a roster that leaned young last season. Trouba had been expected to hit the open market once the calendar flipped to July.

It’s been a busy stretch for GM Mike Grier, who also re-signed Zack Ostapchuk earlier this offseason.

The Sharks went 39-35-8 last season and missed the playoffs again. Marchment and Trouba won’t flip that on their own, but San Jose is done sitting still.
