Sean McDonough picked a strange hill to die on Tuesday night.

During Game 4 between the Buffalo Sabres and Montreal Canadiens, the ESPN play-by-play voice suggested on air that Sabres captain Rasmus Dahlin might be working to reopen an “old cut” after taking a high stick to the mouth. The penalty was already called, and the blood pushed it to a double minor.

Here’s the clip making the rounds:

Dahlin caught the stick clean to the face in the second period at Bell Centre. The replay was unmistakable. He was bleeding before he even got back to the bench, and the only thing he was working on was getting back into the play.

Buffalo used the four minutes to tie the game on one of the strangest goals of these playoffs. Tage Thompson rang a dump-in around the boards from center ice, the puck caught a corner of glass near the Zamboni door, kicked off Jakub Dobes’ right pad, and dribbled in.

The Sabres rode that bounce to a 3-2 comeback win, evening the series at two games apiece. Alex Newhook hit a rare Habs milestone in the loss, but Montreal walked off home ice tied instead of leading.

McDonough is a veteran and pretty much everyone knows he wasn’t actually accusing Dahlin of fraud. The trouble is double minors come from blood, not theatrics, and Dahlin had a stick to his lip on a clean replay. Sabres fans on social media weren’t in a forgiving mood.
