The Detroit Red Wings will have Patrick Kane on their roster once again in 2025-26.

Kane, who was set to become an unrestricted free agent on Tuesday, signed a one-year deal on Monday evening worth $3 million, with a possible $4 million in bonuses:

Here’s a breakdown of the incentives, via The Athletic:

  • $2.5 million for 10 games played
  • $250,000 for 30 games played
  • $250,000 for 50 games played
  • $500,000 for reaching the playoffs
  • $250,000 for a round 1 win
  • $250,000 for a round 2 win

Despite turning 37 later this year, Kane is still putting up solid numbers. The former No. 1 overall pick scored 21 goals in 2024-25 while also adding 38 assists. While the Red Wings ultimately missed the Stanley Cup Playoffs, Kane finished fourth on the team in points with 59.

The veteran also inked a similar one-year contract with Detroit last summer. Kane suited up 72 times last season and averaged just under 18 minutes of ice time per game. Although he’s not scoring 40+ goals per year anymore, Kane is an important piece for a young Red Wings squad that is looking to finally break through in the Atlantic Division and secure a postseason berth.

They’ve been busy so far leading up to free agency. Detroit swung a trade for John Gibson over the weekend, who will get a fresh start in Motown and likely split the goaltending duties with Cam Talbot. The club also traded Vladimir Tarasenko to the Minnesota Wild on Monday to free up some cap space.

Kane will continue to be key for the Red Wings both on and off the ice. He ranks third all-time among American-born players in goals, trailing Mike Modano by 31. Modano sits in second place.

But that’s not exactly the focus. Kane undoubtedly wants to help Detroit be competitive and compete for a Cup. After all, he’s a two-time champion himself and has always performed in the playoffs.
