Carter Gylander is sticking around Detroit for another year.
The Red Wings announced Tuesday that they re-signed the 25-year-old goaltender to a one-year, two-way contract, a year after he put up a .942 save percentage in eight AHL games. Daily Faceoff reported the deal carries an $850,000 NHL cap hit and a $90,000 minor-league salary for 2026-27. Gylander was a restricted free agent coming off his entry-level contract.

He earned it in a small sample. Gylander made eight appearances for the AHL’s Grand Rapids Griffins last season and went 7-0-2 with a 1.62 goals-against average and a .942 save percentage. His first AHL shutout came Dec. 21 against the Cleveland Monsters.
Most of his work has come a level below that. The 6-foot-5 Alberta native played 34 games in each of his two pro seasons with the ECHL’s Toledo Walleye, going 20-9-5 with a 2.78 GAA and a .901 save percentage this past year. He added six wins in 10 playoff games.
Detroit drafted him 191st overall in 2019 and then waited four years while he played out his eligibility at Colgate. He rewrote a few pages of the record book there, including 1,044 saves in 2022-23, and started 39 of the Raiders’ 40 games that season on the way to an ECAC title.
Where he plays next fall is the harder question. Sebastian Cossa is gone to Utah, but Michal Postava took over as Grand Rapids’ starter in the Calder Cup Playoffs, and Mike Richter Award winner Trey Augustine is about to begin his first full pro season. That’s three goalies for two crease jobs in the AHL.
John Gibson and Daniil Tarasov are the NHL tandem, so Gylander is not knocking on that door yet. He has never played an NHL game.
Deals like this have been a theme in Detroit all summer, including the one-year, two-way contract they gave Chase Stillman on July 4. Gylander gets his shot to force the issue at training camp.
