Tensions are boiling over for the Buffalo Sabres.
A scrum broke out at Sabres practice this morning as the team aims to rebound from a disappointing start. Captain Rasmus Dahlin and forward Peyton Krebs traded blows in a video that went viral on social media.
The event unfolded when Dahlin delivered an open-ice hip check on Krebs during a drill. Following the hip check, Dahlin went after Krebs and a few punches were thrown. Fortunately, teammates were able to intervene and break up the fight before any serious damage was caused.

Dahlin is known for his hip check, but seeing him using it in practice on a teammate was pretty wild. Dahlin went quite low on the hit, which makes no sense for a practice. We knew there had to be more to this story, and it turns out we were right.
According to Sabres reporter Paul Hamilton, Krebs had accidentally got his stick up on Dahlin in front of the net in the drill prior. That’s what led to Dahlin becoming angry and targeting Krebs.
The beef appears to be squashed already, as Krebs posted a funny Instagram story explaining he and Dahlin were still friends. Krebs further explained they both practice hard and that these things can happen. Dahlin reportedly also apologized after practice.
NHL practice fights are rare, but they actually aren’t as uncommon as you might think.
Just last season, Lucas Raymond and Ben Chiarot mixed it up during a Red Wings practice. This also happened during a rough patch for the team. The result? Raymond going beast mode down the final stretch and almost leading the team to the postseason.
The Sabres are 1-2 to begin the 2023-24 campaign, so it’s understandable emotions are running high. However, Dahlin will want to leave the hip check to the real games, as these types of low hits are dangerous for everyone involved.
