The New York Rangers are giving Matt Rempe a chance to get more ice time, it just won’t be in the NHL.

The team has decided to send the second-year forward down to their AHL affiliate, the Hartford Wolf Pack, per TSN’s Chris Johnston. The expectation is Rempe will find his way back to the big league squad at some point in the 2024-25 campaign.

Rempe saw limited minutes so far in this young season, suiting up in just two of seven contests. He hasn’t registered a single point and, most notably, had no penalty minutes. At 6 foot 9, Rempe is a true enforcer and is expected to be a physical presence who can drop the gloves at any given moment.

The Calgary, Alberta native has become a fan favorite, however for his ability to fight. Last season, he suited up 17 times at the NHL level, scoring once and tallying an assist. He also had a whopping 71 penalty minutes.

In 43 AHL appearances in 2023-24, Rempe registered nearly 100 penalty minutes. He’ll now look to prove himself in Hartford and work his way back up to the Rangers, who will certainly miss his toughness on the ice. That being said, there’s also no point in having him just be a healthy scratch when he can play in the minors.

New York is off to a solid start to begin the campaign with a 5-1-1 record, which puts them at the top of the Metropolitan Division. Thursday evening was their first regulation loss however, falling to the defending Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers, the same team who beat them in the conference finals.

The Rangers have won all four games on the road but have yet to come out victorious at Madison Square Garden, going 1-1-1.
