You can add Dr. in front of Alex Ovechkin’s name.

The Capitals captain earned a PhD in Pedagogical Sciences back in 2022 after defending a 145-page dissertation on hockey training methods, per RMNB. The news only went public this week, when a Twitter user dug up the paperwork and posted the link.

Here’s the receipt:

Title’s a mouthful: “Organization of the technical and tactical training process in professional hockey clubs of Russia and the National Hockey League.” Boil it down and it is a comparison of how Russian and North American programs develop young players, plus a pitch for what each side could pick up from the other.

Ovechkin’s read on the split: Russian programs lean on puck possession and stickhandling, while North American programs push pace and physicality. He suggested blending both, then put the theory to work with a CSKA Moscow youth team for a full season. Per the paper, the kids picked up both systems at once and played better for it.

He leaned on legends in the bibliography too, citing Anatoly Tarasov and Viktor Tikhonov before presenting his findings to Russia’s Higher Attestation Commission, the federal body that signs off on advanced degrees.

Ovechkin explained years ago why he put in the work.

“I want to help with the development of Russian hockey in the future.”

Now 40, he just wrapped his 21st NHL season with 32 goals and 64 points across all 82 games.

Free agency hits this summer, and Ovechkin hasn’t closed the door on a 22nd year in D.C. If the playing days do end, the post-hockey resume already has a doctorate on it.
