Superstars like Edmonton Oilers centre Connor McDavid do a lot more than just produce on the ice. They’re typically phenomenal teammates as well, and the three-time Hart Trophy winner proved just that in the West Finals against the Dallas Stars.

Zach Hyman suffered a season-ending wrist injury in Game 4 of that series, and while he won’t play in the Stanley Cup Finals against the Florida Panthers, the veteran told reporters Wednesday that McDavid was the first one to console him in the middle of that contest when the injury happened.

Heartwarming stuff from McDavid, who leads the Oilers in these playoffs with 26 points. He and Hyman have built a strong relationship over the last four years, and they’ve done serious damage together on the ice.

Although Hyman is gutted to miss this opportunity at revenge, he’s aware this unfortunate setback is out of his hands:

“Some things in life you can’t control, and this is one of them,” Hyman said.

Before the series-clinching Game 5 last Thursday, McDavid spoke on how brutal it is that Edmonton lost such a key piece in Hyman:

“It’s extremely disappointing to lose Hy,” said McDavid, via Oilers Nation. “Devastated for him, obviously.

“That’s a guy who wants to be out there, wants to make a difference, so we’ll miss him a lot, but it’s great to see Ekky come back. He’s put in a lot of hard work to get to this point — credit to him, credit to the training staff for getting him back.”

Hyman was a physical force in the postseason with 111 hits in only 14 games. That was a career-best for the 32-year-old, who didn’t even come close to that number previously throughout an entire season.

The injured Hyman will be there to support his squad in the Cup Finals and will also travel with the Oilers to Florida for Games 3,4, and 6.
