The Edmonton Oilers lost a key player in the first period of Game 4 against the Dallas Stars on Tuesday night.

Forward Zach Hyman took a hit from Mason Marchment and immediately dropped his stick in pain. Hyman exited down the tunnel and never returned with what looked to be an upper-body injury:

Not a good sign for the Oilers. Hyman has been a huge piece of this team all season long, and he leads the playoffs in hits with 109. The next closest is Sam Bennett at 82. Hyman is a physical presence, and he’s also got five goals and six assists.

We will get more clarity on the injury after the contest, but considering he never came back into the game, it’s not ideal by any means for Edmonton. Kris Knoblauch’s group took a 2-1 series lead into Tuesday’s matchup and will be looking to put the Stars on the brink of elimination before heading on the road.

At the time of Hyman’s injury, the game was still scoreless. It’s now 2-1 Edmonton. Leon Draisaitl scored in the first before Jason Robertson equalized in the second period. Corey Perry then responded shortly after. Dallas got a boost with the return of Roope Hintz, who was activated for Game 4 after being questionable earlier in the day.

Hyman missing any long period would certainly hurt the Oilers in their pursuit of a Stanley Cup, especially if they’re going to be facing the Florida Panthers in a rematch from last year. The Cats are physical and one of the dirtiest teams in the league. Edmonton will need all hands on deck, and the toughness of Hyman will be important if they get to the Finals.

Stay tuned for any updates on Hyman.
