You rarely see an organization release a statement regarding a suspension of one of their players, but that’s exactly what the Edmonton Oilers did on Tuesday afternoon.

One day after Connor McDavid was hit with a three-game suspension for cross-checking Vancouver Canucks winger Conor Garland, the Oilers expressed their displeasure with the ruling.

Take a look:

The Oilers organization is disappointed and we share in our fans’ frustration over the three-game suspension of our captain Connor McDavid. We support him through this process and the organization and our fans look forward to having him back in the lineup vs. Seattle next week.

McDavid decided on Tuesday morning to not appeal his suspension. While general NHL fans who don’t support the Oilers were criticizing him for the hit on Saturday evening, Garland was doing everything he could to get under McDavid’s skin. The three-time Hart Trophy winner let his emotions get the best of him and it resulted in NHL Player Safety punishing the superstar.

Oilers fans are of course standing up for their franchise cornerstone, which makes complete sense. Three games may seem a bit stiff. However, McDavid did cross-check Garland in the face. That does warrant a suspension, perhaps just not this long.

Regardless, McDavid didn’t even bother trying to protest it and instead, he’ll just sit out and wait until he can suit up again. Edmonton is in action as we speak against Alexander Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals.

Next, the Oilers face the Canucks for the second time in the last week on Thursday before also hosting the Buffalo Sabres over the weekend. McDavid is officially allowed to return next Monday at Rogers Place against the Seattle Kraken.
