The Edmonton Oilers have released a statement about the medical emergency that transpired during Saturday’s game between Calgary and Edmonton.

Last night, hockey fans became very worried after the Battle of Alberta was paused for a substantial amount of time before puck drop. It was soon reported by the team that a fan in the stands suffered a medical emergency, which required the Oilers’ team doctor to provide immediate aid.

The Oilers have since released a statement confirming that play was halted with 18:45 remaining in the first period when a fan collapsed near the Oilers’ bench.

Here is the full statement from the Oilers:

During last night’s Battle of Alberta game at Rogers Place, a fan experienced a medical emergency and was attended to by emergency personnel, OEGSE arena and team staff, and fans. The game was paused to allow the time and space needed to attend to the fan and prepare them for transport to hospital. The Edmonton Oilers and OEGSE are grateful to the emergency services personnel, our OEGSE staff, and the fans who assisted in attending to this emergency. Our thoughts and prayers are with the fan, their family and loved ones, and we wish them a speedy recovery.

Rogers Place fell eerily silent as medical staff rushed to assist, with Sportsnet commentator Louie DeBrusk noting, “The building’s gotten really quiet over here, and you never wanna see this… You can almost feel it on the bench.”

The game was delayed approximately 10 minutes while first responders and team doctors administered care. The fan was transported to a local hospital via ambulance, with unofficial reports suggesting CPR was performed at the scene.

Per NHL protocols, the delay extended until a replacement ambulance arrived, as league rules require a team doctor and ambulance to be present throughout games.

Play eventually resumed, with the Oilers securing a 3-2 overtime victory thanks to Leon Draisaitl’s game-winner—his 50th goal of the season—though the celebration was subdued following the earlier incident.

Fans across social media have expressed concern for the individual, with many sharing prayers and well-wishes. One fan wrote on X, “Scary scene in Edmonton tonight. The game got delayed due to a medical emergency in the crowd. Sending prayers to the fan.”

As of March 30, 2025, no official update has been provided regarding the fan’s condition.
