The Edmonton Oilers have been the comeback kings in the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs, and that trend continued on Tuesday night in Game 1 against the Vegas Golden Knights.

The Oilers allowed two early goals to the Pacific Division champs but proceeded to score four unanswered to notch a huge 4-2 road victory. In the process, they made NHL history. Edmonton is the first team to win five consecutive playoff games in comeback fashion.

Remember, the Oilers fell into a 0-2 hole against the Los Angeles Kings in Round One before four straight wins in that series. They also trailed in Games 3-6. This is a gritty team who have a ton of heart.

Kris Knoblauch’s squad cut the Golden Knights’ lead in half in the second period before netting three in the third period. Zach Hyman gave his honest thoughts on the record, making it clear that the Oilers need to come out of the gates with more focus and intensity:

“I mean, you don’t want to be down in five games,” Hyman said, via ESPN. “Again, we have the experience that we can come back and fight our way out of it. Yeah, you have to have that belief in your group when you are down and come back to win five in a row like that.”

Four players got on the scoresheet in the series opener, including Leon Draisaitl, Corey Perry, and Hyman. Connor McDavid also tallied a pair of helpers.

The Oilers also locked up defensively in the second and third periods, allowing only seven shots on goal. Vegas had 10 in the first alone. Edmonton will be looking to carry the momentum into Game 2, but perhaps getting an early lead would be beneficial. Playing from behind isn’t a recipe for success in the long run as McDavid and Co. eye another Cup run.
