The Oilers grabbed one of their depth pieces before he could test the open market.
Edmonton re-signed center Jason Dickinson to a five-year contract worth $20 million on Sunday, an average annual value of $4 million. The 30-year-old was two weeks away from unrestricted free agency on July 1.
The team made it official:
Dickinson landed in Edmonton at the trade deadline, coming over from Chicago on March 4. He put up four points (one goal, three assists) in 17 regular-season games with the Oilers and finished the year with 17 points across 64 games between both clubs.
His best work came when it counted. Dickinson scored twice in Game 1 of Edmonton’s first-round series against Anaheim, part of a three-point postseason in four games.

That run ended fast. Anaheim took the series in six and the Oilers were out in the first round again.
Dickinson talked about his future in Edmonton during his exit interview after the team was eliminated.
“It was fantastic, I loved playing here. The crowd was amazing, the organization treats you fantastic, the city feels like home. I love it here and it’s something I’d be willing to talk to them about and get something moving.”
Dallas drafted him in the first round, 29th overall, back in 2013. He now has 172 points in 566 career games with the Stars, Canucks, Blackhawks and Oilers.
Edmonton is sorting out its roster before it even has a bench boss in place. The Oilers still haven’t officially named a head coach, though Mike Babcock is expected to take over.
