Darnell Nurse is a San Jose Shark.

The Oilers traded their longtime alternate captain to the Sharks on Wednesday afternoon, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported. Edmonton retained none of the salary, and young defenseman Shakir Mukhamadullin is headed the other way.

Here’s how Friedman laid it out:

The final details were still being sorted when word broke, but the core of it held. Nurse to San Jose, Mukhamadullin to Edmonton, no money eaten by the Oilers.

Nurse had to sign off on this one. He carries a full no-move clause, and the Sharks weren’t on his approved list when the day started. That flipped Wednesday afternoon.

Friedman reported the opening earlier in the afternoon:

The contract is the reason Edmonton spent months shopping him. Nurse has four years left on the eight-year, $74 million extension he signed in 2021, a $9.25 million cap hit that never quite matched his role. He went seventh overall to Edmonton in 2013 and spent his entire career there.

Mukhamadullin gives the Oilers a cheaper, younger left-shot option on the back end. The 24-year-old was a pending restricted free agent in San Jose after landing there in the 2023 Timo Meier trade with New Jersey.

It caps a busy day for Edmonton. Earlier Wednesday, the Oilers added goalie Devon Levi from Buffalo. Now their blue line looks a lot different heading into next season.
