The Devils are getting to work on keeping their captain.
New Jersey and Nico Hischier have started talking about a contract extension, and the early numbers are not small. ESPN’s Kevin Weekes expects Hischier’s next deal to land on a medium-term extension somewhere in the $11 million to $13 million range, depending on the term.
Hischier cannot officially put pen to paper until July 1, but The Fourth Period reported the talks are trending the right way. GM Sunny Mehta and Hischier’s agent Allain Roy have been sorting through the parameters.
Now 27, he is heading into the final year of the seven-year, $50.75 million deal he signed in his early 20s. That contract runs at a $7.25 million cap hit and once looked like an overpay. It turned into a bargain.
A raise was always coming. Hischier just wrapped a 66-point season, with 28 goals and 38 assists across all 82 games. He led the Devils in goals and stayed one of the best two-way centers in the league.

He also carries a 10-team no-trade list, so he has a say in where this goes. A few clubs noticed the contract clock ticking. The Montreal Canadiens made it known they would like to talk trade if an extension never came together.
That door looks shut now. With Jack Hughes anchoring the other half of the Devils’ center duo, signing Hischier keeps the core together for a team that missed the playoffs in 2026 and wants back in.
