The New York Islanders are on top of the hockey world — the NHL Draft world, that is.

The NHL held its annual Draft Lottery on Monday night, with the lottery balls being drawn live for the first time. Teams’ chances to win one of the two lotteries — for first and second overall — ranged from 25.5% for the San Jose Sharks to 3% for the New York Rangers.

The New York Islanders were just above the Rangers at 3.5%, and that came through for the fans on Long Island.

Despite finishing with a .500 point percentage, the Islanders now own the first overall pick in the 2025 NHL Draft. Left-handed defenseman Matthew Schaefer is expected to go first overall with forward Michael Misa right behind him.

After the Islanders won the first overall lottery, the second lottery for pick No. 2 took place. And there was an even more improbable outcome with the Utah Hockey Club winning the lottery despite having just a 1.5% chance. However, teams can’t move up more than 10 spots, so Utah will have the fourth overall pick after finishing with the 14th-worst record.

Here is how the 2025 NHL Draft Lottery and pick order looks after Monday night’s lottery:

While the Islanders and Utah are the clear winners of the lottery, there are plenty of losers as well.

The Nashville Predators, Philadelphia Flyers, Boston Bruins, Seattle Kraken, Buffalo Sabres, Anaheim Ducks, and Pittsburgh Penguins all moved down two spots. The New York Rangers, Detroit Red Wings, and Columbus Blue Jackets all moved down one spot.

The 2025 NHL Draft Lottery took place remotely and the actual draft will follow suit. Teams will have their draft war rooms set up rather than the draft floor that we’ve seen in past years.

The 2025 NHL Draft will take place on June 27 and 28. The first round will be on Friday night with the remaining rounds on Saturday.
