- Mitch Marner erupted at Maple Leafs teammates during Game 7 loss to Florida Panthers
- The 28-year-old pending UFA has just one goal in this year’s playoff series

Mitch Marner is fed up with his Toronto Maple Leafs.
Marner laid into teammates after they gave up three straight unanswered goals against the Florida Panthers in Game 7 on Sunday night. Florida went on to win the game by a 6-1 score.
TV broadcast cameras caught Marner’s meltdown, and it quickly went viral on social media. In the five-second video, Marner tells his teammates, “Wake the F up.”
Check out the clip here, which immediately preceded the Panthers’ 3-0 goal from Jonah Gadjovich.

While you can see the frustration and saliva drooling from his lower lip, some fans quickly pointed out the lack of sweat in Marner’s hair.
We love to see a leader holding his teammates accountable, but Marner hasn’t exactly “woken up” in these big games. In fact, when you look at Marner’s Game 7 history, he only has two points in six career winner-take-all games.
Across the series, Marner recorded one goal and four assists, which isn’t terrible. However, Toronto fans have piled on him for disappearing in high-stakes moments.
It would be unfortunate if this is the last image of Marner in Toronto, as he did help the team achieve plenty of regular-season success. Marner and former captain John Tavares are both unrestricted free agents as of July 1, 2025.
The Leafs haven’t won a Game 7 since 2004 (against Ottawa) and are 0-for-6 in Game 7s in the Matthews-Marner era. This type of Game 7 history just isn’t good enough for a team loaded with superstars. Marner made just shy of $11M in his final year of his contract.
Marner losing it on his teammates takes us back to a similar moment last playoffs when William Nylander called out his teammates. In that clip during Game 7, Nylander tells Marner and Matthews something along the lines of, “this isn’t junior.”
Marner is a Toronto native who grew up idolizing the Leafs. Playing for his childhood team is a dream come true, but it comes with immense pressure in a hockey-mad market. So far, he hasn’t been able to elevate under the pressure.
At 28, Marner is nearing a career-defining moment as a UFA. But with no playoff success on his resume, it will be hard for any team to justify the massive contract he’s seeking.
