- Penguins fan Pat McAfee had Flyers head coach Rick Tocchet on his show the morning after Game 6
- Tocchet pitched McAfee on covering the Flyers’ bar bills all summer if Philly wins the Stanley Cup
- Read below for how McAfee talked the wager down to a single capped weekend
Pat McAfee is putting some skin in the game for the Flyers’ Stanley Cup chase.
The Pittsburgh Penguins fan welcomed Philadelphia head coach Rick Tocchet onto his show Thursday, less than a day after Cam York’s overtime winner closed out the Penguins in Game 6. McAfee bet Tocchet that Philly could grind through three more rounds and bring the Cup home to Broad Street.
Tocchet’s terms were steep. He wanted McAfee to cover the Flyers’ bar bills for the entire summer if they finish the job. McAfee laughed it off and talked him down to one weekend with a hard cap.
Watch the exchange:
That’s a smart hedge, and the math backs it up. The 2011 Boston Bruins reportedly racked up a $156,679.74 bar tab during their Cup run, and a celebrating NHL room knows how to torch a credit card. McAfee already covered a $150,000 bill at E11EVEN for the U.S. Men’s Hockey Team this season, so he has seen this kind of damage up close.
This whole bet only exists because the Flyers refused to go away. They nearly coughed up a 3-0 series lead before Cam York’s overtime goal finally finished off the Penguins. Philly’s team account couldn’t help itself either:
Up next is a second-round matchup with the Carolina Hurricanes, who swept Ottawa and have been parked on the couch since last week. Carolina went 3-0-1 against Philadelphia in the regular season and will have home ice. The Atlantic winner waiting in the conference final won’t make life any easier either.
McAfee can keep his wallet shut for the moment. If Tocchet’s group keeps surprising people, that capped weekend could end up being the priciest bet of his life.
