Max Domi is engaged.
The Maple Leafs forward shared the news on Instagram on Sunday, posting a photo of the ring with a four-word caption: “I love you so much.” His longtime girlfriend, Estelle Phillips, confirmed it on her own account and said the proposal happened on her birthday.
Tie Domi did not let his son’s engagement pass without saying something. The former Leafs enforcer wrote his own Instagram post about Max and Estelle a few hours later.
“I’ve never seen two people more ready for this. It feels like just yesterday you were my little boy, and now I get to watch you build a life and future with the woman you love.”
Sunday’s post caps a summer Domi would rather skip past. His spring back surgery did not go the way anyone drew it up. Toronto Sun columnist Steve Simmons reported that something went badly wrong during the procedure, and Domi could not walk in the days that followed.
He had chosen the surgeon himself rather than going through the Leafs’ medical staff, which players around the league do all the time.
Walking is no longer a problem. Skating is the open question. Toronto plans to look at him once training camp opens in September, and nobody in the organization has attached a date to his return.
Domi played through the injury that eventually put him under the knife, dressing for 80 games last season. He finished with 12 goals and 24 assists in his third year in Toronto.
Camp will sort out the hockey. The engagement is the news Domi gets to enjoy first.
