Despite positive signs in practice, Mattias Ekholm won’t suit up for the Edmonton Oilers in tonight’s Western Conference Final opener against the Dallas Stars.

The veteran blueliner, sidelined since April 11 with an undisclosed injury, has made significant strides in his recovery. He surprised even himself with his quick progress.

“I didn’t think I was going to be in this position this quick,” Ekholm said after joining Monday’s full practice session. This marked his first complete workout since the injury.

But the Oilers are playing it safe. Head coach Kris Knoblauch already confirmed Ekholm would miss at least Games 1 and 2 of the series. Not the injury update Oil Country wants to hear.

The good news? Edmonton’s defense hasn’t missed a beat without him. They’ve been rock solid, surrendering just 10 goals against Vegas last round.

This marks the stingiest defensive showing of the McDavid-Draisaitl era in Edmonton.

Stuart Skinner has been outstanding in net, posting back-to-back shutouts to close out the Golden Knights.

The blue line crew of Darnell Nurse, Evan Bouchard, Brett Kulak, Jake Walman, Troy Stecher, and John Klingberg has stepped up admirably. Ty Emberson has also proven reliable when called upon.

There’s optimism Ekholm could return later in the series, possibly for Game 5 or 6. For now, though, the Oilers will roll with what’s working.

Edmonton continues their pursuit of a second straight Cup Final appearance as puck drops at American Airlines Center at 8 p.m. ET.
