The Flyers went into Pittsburgh for their first playoff game in six years and walked out with a 3-2 win.
The kid did most of the damage.
Porter Martone wired a wrist shot over Stuart Skinner’s shoulder with 2:37 left in the third to push Philadelphia ahead 3-1. Bryan Rust trimmed the lead back to one a minute later, but the Flyers held on.
At 19 years, 174 days old, Martone became the youngest player in franchise history to score in his playoff debut. He broke a mark set by Simon Gagne in Game 1 of the 2000 Eastern Conference Quarterfinals, when Gagne was 20 years, 44 days old.
“For me, it’s my 10th NHL game,” Martone said. “It’s pretty special, and it’s an opportunity you can’t pass up.”
The sixth pick in the 2025 draft already had one piece of Flyers history on his résumé. His first career NHL goal came in overtime against the Bruins on April 5, making him the first player in franchise history to score his debut goal in extra time.
The video of the sequence shows Martone spinning off Noel Acciari at the edge of the right circle, cutting back toward the slot, and firing high glove side. Skinner had no chance once the puck left Martone’s stick.
Travis Sanheim broke a 1-1 tie with 10:00 to play after splitting two Pittsburgh forwards to the slot. Jamie Drysdale opened the scoring in the second period, also in his playoff debut.
Rick Tocchet kept his postgame short. “Just stay with the game, because you cheat the game, bang, it can go the other way,” the first-year coach said. “I don’t think we cheated the game tonight.”
The result flipped home ice in the Metropolitan series. The Penguins returned to the postseason after a three-year absence, and now they need a response from Crosby, Malkin, and Letang in Game 2 on Monday. Full box score is on NHL.com.
