Marcus Foligno thought he was taking his family on a hospital tour. He walked out with the King Clancy Memorial Trophy instead.

The Wild forward visited the University of Minnesota Masonic Cancer Center on Thursday with his wife and kids. His brother and teammate Nick was waiting in a room at the end of the visit, trophy in hand.

His family kept him in the dark the whole time.

“I don’t know if my daughters knew because they would definitely not have been able to keep a secret so my wife did a pretty good job of hiding this and to see my brother here obviously with the trophy was really special,” Marcus told NHL.com. “Honestly, I had no idea.”

The King Clancy goes to the player who best shows leadership on and off the ice and makes a real humanitarian contribution in his community. This one started with their mom.

Together the brothers launched the Foligno Face-Off this season alongside the NHL, the NHLPA, the Wild, the Blackhawks and the V Foundation. Fans picked Team Nick or Team Marcus and donated $17, the number both wore at the time.

When Nick got traded to Minnesota in March and switched to No. 71, the ask jumped to $71. The campaign has raised more than $200,000 for breast cancer research in honor of their mother, Janis, who died of the disease in 2009.

Before the surprise went down, Nick talked about why he had to be in the room.

“I wanted to be here and be a part of this,” he said. “Just thrilled for Marcus and it kind of all came together.”

Take a look at the trophy photos the Wild posted:

Minnesota’s veteran winger wrapped up his ninth season with the club, putting up 13 points in 56 games. The King Clancy is the latest trophy handed out this week after Jon Cooper finally grabbed his first Jack Adams on Wednesday.

Nick won his King Clancy back in 2017 with Columbus. Nine years later, the trophy stays in the family.
