The Maple Leafs found their scoring winger, and he happens to be one of Auston Matthews’ oldest friends.

Toronto signed Jack Roslovic to a two-year, $8 million contract on Tuesday, a deal that carries a $4 million cap hit. TSN’s Chris Johnston was first with the terms.

The Leafs chased Roslovic in free agency a year ago before he signed in Edmonton. This time they landed him, and they landed him to plug a hole. Toronto lost Matias Maccelli to the Islanders earlier in the day, so Roslovic slides right into that scoring spot.

Roslovic and Matthews go back to their U.S. National Team Development Program days. The two came up through the program together and have stayed close since, and that history was part of the sell.

That production holds up too. Roslovic put up 21 goals and 36 points in 69 games for the Oilers last season, his second straight 20-goal year. Check out what he brings:

He’s a right shot who can play center or wing, which hands Toronto some lineup flexibility it badly needed. The Leafs have spent the summer hunting for difference-makers, and a proven finisher at $4 million checks a box.

Toronto missed the playoffs last spring. Adding secondary scoring on a middle-six salary is the kind of move a bounce-back roster needs.

The Columbus kid has scored for five franchises now. In Toronto, he gets to do it next to the friend he came up with.
