Another Game 7 for the Toronto Maple Leafs, another embarrassing loss.
The Maple Leafs’ history in Game 7s this millennium has been well documented. After winning three of their first five Game 7s in 2002 (twice) and 2004, the Maple Leafs have now lost seven Game 7s in a row.
Toronto took a 2-0 series lead on home ice, but the Maple Leafs lost the next three games to the Florida Panthers. After a Game 5 no-show on home ice that saw fans boo the Leafs and litter the ice with jerseys, Toronto forced a Game 7 back at home with a 2-0 win in Game 6.
However, the excitement in Toronto quickly turned to anxiety and despair. At the first television timeout, the Panthers had all 21 shot attempts in the game. The Maple Leafs battled back in the second half of the period, including a key penalty kill, but entered the first intermission scoreless.
Then the Panthers really took over in the second period. The Cats pounced on the Leafs with three goals in 6:24 of game action to silence the Toronto crowd.
Pending free agent Mitch Marner gave it to his teammates during a TV timeout.

The Leafs were given some life by a Max Domi goal early in the third period, but Eetu Luostarinen answered right back.

It wasn’t long before Leafs fans turned to their tradition of throwing jerseys on the ice.

Craig Berube pulled Joseph Woll for the extra attacker for one last desperate attack, but Brad Marchand put the dagger in the Leafs yet again with an empty-net goal to make it a 6-1 game.
The Leafs were able to win the Atlantic Division and take care of business against the Ottawa Senators in the first round, but they couldn’t get past the reigning Stanley Cup champions in another Game 7 loss.
