Brandon Carlo’s run with the Maple Leafs barely lasted a year.
Toronto traded the veteran defenseman to the St. Louis Blues on Saturday for two third-round picks in the 2026 draft. The Blues sent picks No. 73 and No. 76 to the Leafs and took on the final season of Carlo’s deal.
Carlo, 29, has one year left on the six-year, $24.6 million contract he signed with Boston in 2021. He carries a $4.1 million cap hit and can become an unrestricted free agent next summer.
The Leafs only acquired him 15 months ago. Toronto gave up Fraser Minten and a pair of draft picks to land Carlo from the Bruins at the 2025 trade deadline. He managed seven assists in 55 games this season.
Blues general manager Doug Armstrong talked about what Carlo adds to a blue line that already has some experience on it.
“We’re excited that he’s got size and length, his ability to kill plays, his experience,” Armstrong said. “It allows us to have four experienced players right now in Broberg, Parayko, Fowler and Carlo.”
Carlo also lands with a familiar face. St. Louis coach Jim Montgomery had him in Boston from 2022 to 2024, and Armstrong said Montgomery spoke highly of his character and how he fits a team game.
Boston originally took Carlo 37th overall in 2015. He’s logged 692 regular-season games with 119 points and added 14 points across 85 playoff appearances.
The move keeps a busy stretch going for the Blues, who already swung a deal for Mason McTavish this week. That veteran depth lets younger defensemen like Logan Mailloux work their way in without being rushed.
