The Utah Mammoth landed the center they had been chasing all summer.
Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported Wednesday that Utah acquired Vincent Trocheck from the New York Rangers on the opening day of free agency. Friedman broke the news:
The Rangers get a real package back. Frank Seravalli reported New York lands defenseman Sean Durzi, forward prospect Cole Beaudoin and a 2027 third-round pick. Here are the details:
Trocheck gives the Mammoth a proven middle-six center. The 32-year-old put up 16 goals and 53 points in 67 games last season and won 56.9 percent of his faceoffs. He also captured Olympic gold with Team USA in February.
The Pittsburgh native carries a $5.625 million cap hit with three years left on the seven-year deal he signed on Broadway. Across 868 career games with Florida, Carolina and New York, he has piled up 239 goals and 631 points.
His name had floated in trade talk for the better part of a year. Just days ago, we noted the Rangers were not moving him unless they maximized the return. GM Chris Drury got his price.
Utah GM Bill Armstrong keeps stacking talent. Even after taking on Trocheck’s contract, the Mammoth still sit around $14 million under the cap.
New York’s side of the deal brings youth and a right-shot blueliner. Durzi, 27, had 27 points in 60 games and carries a $6 million cap hit through next season. Beaudoin, the 24th pick in 2024, racked up 88 points in 54 games as captain of the OHL’s Barrie Colts and skated for Canada at the world juniors.
Here is the full cap breakdown:
Trocheck slots straight into Utah’s top six and gives Armstrong the faceoff-winning center this roster needed down the middle.
